relationship management - Con_flict manag_ement is the practice of identifying and handling con_flict in a sensible, fair, and efficient manner. con_flict can be managed by developing and using skills such as effective communicating, problem solving, and negotiating with a focus on "interests. " When we negotiate with a focus on our interests -- the things needed or desired by all individuals involved in the dispute -- rather than our "positions" -- where we focus on blame, fault, and liability for what happened in the past -- we have a better chance of working with, rather than against, each other to discuss and resolve issues. Once mastered, con_flict manag_ement techniques may be used in all aspects of our lives -- home, work, community, school, etc. One important aspect of con_flict manag_ement is the use of Alternative Dispute resol_ution. Alternative Dispute Resol_ution (ADR) refers to a variety of dispute resol_ution techniques that involve the introduction of a neutral third party into a dispute. The "neutral" can play a variety of roles, including facilitating discussions, providing parties with a "reality check" on the merits and value of their claims, assisting with creative problem solving, and writing agreements that reflect the needs of the parties. The most familiar ADR processes are medi_ation and arbitration, which date back to the early 1900s. Some ADR techniques employ an interest-based approach that is often a more constructive alternative to traditional, adversarial processes. ADR has become popular in recent years because it is timely, more efficient, and more cost effective than the traditional, formal systems of redress.
