Holiday 1999
At the start of winter, let us
have a little warmth;
during the busyness of our daily lives, let us have a little peace;
among cynicism, sarcasm and doubt, let
us have a little wonder;
over ugliness, greed and brutality, let us have a little beauty; and
when frightened, exhausted and alone, let us have a little comfort.
When self satisfied, let us
resolve to give and do better;
even in good times, let us remember the destitute, the disabled, the imprisoned;
generosity is always essential to the human spirit; and
in this season of light, let us shine the light of human kindness on all in
need.
Whenever a hand reaches out to help another, whenever
someone sets aside their anger and strives for understanding, when people forget
their differences and realize their love for each other, there is hope for us
all. In this season of hope may the
simple joys of good food, friends, family and the experience of a bountiful
holiday bring us closer to those we love, and those we tend to forget.
Abundance surrounds us at this magical, historic moment.
Thanks to human labors, the genius of so many, and the gifts of the
artists and the heart, our culture enjoys an instant of peace and prosperity.
While challenges await, it is meaningful to celebrate our
accomplishments, and toast our friends, colleagues and collaborators.
Still, another truth haunts the holiday party.
Want, unmet human needs and grinding poverty remind us that all is not
well in the house of human kind. Illness
and disease lay claim to those close to us.
Far too many reside in useless confinement. The
plight of so many demands solutions. Concern
and support are gifts of the heart. Be
generous to all.
May the season bring greater human understanding, many good
things and times, and blessings to you and your family.
May there be much happiness and peace in our world.
